Definition of Telephony

Telephony is a term denoting the technology that allows people to have long distance voice communication. Telephony comes from the word "telephone" in which tele means far and phone means speak. So in the true sense of the word, telephony means speaking from far.

In its broadest concept, Telephony includes phone communication, internet calling, mobile communication, voicemail, faxing and video conferencing.

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) and IP Telephony also included in Telephony and are generally used interchangably of eachother.

According to Wikipedia Telephony is:
"In telecommunication, telephony encompasses the general use of equipment to provide voice communication over distances, specifically by connecting telephones to each other."
