In a time when cybersecurity threats are increasingly complex and persistent, Australia’s need for skilled cybersecurity professionals has never been more critical. Recent estimates indicate that by 2026, the country will face a shortfall of around 16,600 cybersecurity professionals—a gap that could leave both private and public sectors vulnerable.

At Wavelink, we prefer to be part of the solution and not just talk about the problem. To this end, we launched SecurePath last year, an initiative designed to nurture the next generation of cybersecurity talent.

After a successful launch in Adelaide in 2023, SecurePath has now expanded to Melbourne, continuing its efforts to connect emerging cybersecurity professionals with industry leaders. This initiative not only supports Wavelink’s business partners in identifying skilled talent but also plays a crucial role in fostering Australia’s cybersecurity workforce.

A Response to Australia’s Growing Cybersecurity Talent Shortage

As cybersecurity risks evolve, the demand for experts who can prevent, detect, and respond to these threats is rising at an unprecedented pace. SecurePath helps students and recent graduates take the first step toward a career in cybersecurity. By providing structured opportunities to engage directly with prospective employers, SecurePath aims to bridge the gap between academic training and practical, job-ready skills, ultimately creating a more robust cybersecurity talent pipeline.

Building Connections Through Hands-On Events

The SecurePath initiative debuted in Adelaide last year with the aim of connecting students with local technology services leaders. The event, held in collaboration with the Fortinet, brought together more than 100 students from University of South Australia and TAFE SA and Wavelink’s network of partners including Arxis, Compnow, Comunet, Duco, Iocane, Subnet, Vocus and Wireless Communications. This year, SecurePath returned to Adelaide, drawing nearly 100 attendees once again, while expanding into Melbourne to reach even more aspiring professionals.

In Melbourne, more than 100 students from institutions including Melbourne Polytechnic, Federation University Australia, Holmesglen Institute, and Swinburne University participated. At each event, students engaged directly with Wavelink’s extensive partner network, including Bridged Group, BluBiz Solutions, Honeylight Consulting and Optimus Systems. These companies were excited to connect with students eager to begin their careers in the field.

The structure of these events featured a speed-networking format that facilitated meaningful conversations between students and potential employers. This dynamic approach allowed students to gain a clear understanding of what leading cybersecurity organizations are looking for, helping them bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills required in real-world roles.

Industry Leaders and Graduates Alike See the Impact

According to Nick Touzeau, Chief Operating Officer at Wavelink, the success of SecurePath is a reflection of both the growing demand for cybersecurity skills and Wavelink’s proactive approach to nurturing fresh talent. “Wavelink’s partners face challenges in finding skilled cybersecurity talent consistently, particularly as the demand for security professionals continues to rise. Wavelink created the SecurePath initiative to help partners access fresh talent and bridge this skills gap. This initiative also lets Wavelink contribute to Australia’s cybersecurity community and job market by supporting the next generation of professionals,” Touzeau noted.

For partners like Wireless Communications, SecurePath provides an invaluable opportunity to connect with skilled graduates in a relaxed, social environment. Trent White, Chief Technology Officer at Wireless Communications, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, sharing that his company hired three students directly from last year’s Adelaide event, all of whom have quickly become valued team members. “The shortage of skilled cybersecurity professionals in Australia is a real challenge for businesses like Wireless Communications,” White explained. “The SecurePath program offers a unique setting where we can connect with graduates in a social environment, helping us identify potential hires who fit the Wireless Communications culture.”

From Student to Professional: A First-Hand Success Story

The SecurePath program doesn’t just benefit employers—it has also proven transformative for students aiming to break into the cybersecurity field. Cooper Laheney, an ICT Support Engineer at Wireless Communications and a former SecurePath attendee shared his experience of attending the Adelaide event. “Breaking into cybersecurity can be tough, especially for students looking for their first role,” Laheney said. “This event made it possible to meet and speak directly with companies in my city, giving me a clear understanding of what they expect. The insights I gained helped me transition from student to professional.”

Laheney’s success story highlights the power of SecurePath to connect students with real-world opportunities and foster meaningful career growth. His journey, from attending the event as a student to now working within the industry, is a testament to the program’s value for both individuals and the broader cybersecurity landscape.

Looking Ahead: Expanding the Reach of SecurePath

Wavelink remains dedicated to extending SecurePath’s reach and impact. By supporting the next generation of cybersecurity professionals, the company is not only addressing immediate industry needs but also contributing to the long-term resilience of Australia’s cybersecurity sector. As SecurePath continues to grow, more students will have access to these invaluable networking opportunities, and more companies will be able to tap into an emerging pool of talent.

In a world where cybersecurity threats are both dynamic and dangerous, initiatives like SecurePath are critical to ensuring that businesses and institutions remain secure. By building a bridge between the education sector and industry, Wavelink’s SecurePath is paving the way for a safer, more secure future for Australia and beyond.
